The "N" record are traditionally "DN" or extension to "TN" or trunk calls (outgoing). Those records most of the time have durations since the entire record is compiled when the call terminates. The "S" records are "Start of Call" and the "E" records are "End of Call". IThe direction of the call is based on what is the first alphanumeric value (DN or TN). Therefore, TN to DN would be incoming calls (and outgoing for the reverse). The switch output these records at the start and end of the call. You then need to match them up and marry them together. You can't get an actual duration to the second. You will need to subtract the start time from the end time. In your example you have 2 start records and 1 end record. There will eventually be another E record later in the data. There is a series of algorithms that are required to really do this properly. You need to make sure you "marry" the right records together.

To make it more complicated, the SL-1 formats sometimes vary with hidden null characters, routing codes in front of the digits, longer/shorter DNs, 2nd/3rd line fro CLID information and many other factors. There is no really easy way to explain the records.

RSI has been working with this stuff for years.

Here's a topic that I found quite usefull when I found it a while ago.

pbxinfo.com/meridian-systems/11243-how-read-smdr-data.html

PP: Can I also get a copy of that PDF file as well? I'd like to know more details. I'll send you a PM with my e-mail address.
