Cool Nortel WLAN Catch-22

Hey there... this ghost makes a reappearance... or as the Monty Python line goes "I'm not dead yet!"

How many folk have any experience with the Nortel wireless WLAN phones? We have a large deployment of the 2211 sets and it works farily well. So when the new 801.11a/b/g series phones came out (6140 and 6120) we wanted to try them. But there seems to be a problem.

The 22XX WLAN series phones don't care if they have any firmware available on the TFTP server. When booting these phones search for a moment and if they don't find the SLNK_CFG.CFG file they go on their merry way and finish booting.

The 61XX WLAN phones get hung up. If there is no SLNK_CFG.CFG file on the TFTP server they flash back and forth forever between "Checking Code... slnk_cfg.cfg" and "Initializing..."

So the obvious solution is... put the firmware for the 61XX series sets on the TFTP server. That works fine for the 61XX series sets. They now check their firmware and go on their merry way. *BUT* now the 21XX series sets are upset. Both sets use the SLNK_CFG.CFG for their software but they use different SLNK_CFG.CFG files! I can't point them to different TFTP servers because both sets get the address of the TFTP server from the DHCP server.

In short, I can't make the 61XX series phones happy without screwing up the 22XX sets and I can't make the 22XX series phones happy without screwing up the 61XX sets! HELP!

Any ideas?

The Right Venerable SD

The sample slnk_cfg.cfg file from Nortel: Technical Support: Home for the 6120/6140 firmware is:
[TYPE10]
pd11usd.bin
pi110006.bin

[TYPE32]
pd14udus.bin
pd14odus.bin
pd14cus.bin
pi1400us.bin

The [TYPE10] section is used by a WLAN Handset 22xx. The [TYPE32] section is used by a WLAN Handset 61xx. You CAN use the same slnk_cfg.cfg file for both types of handsets.

Cool

Ok, the one annoying thing there is that the 61XX firmware does not come with pd11usd.bin pi110006.bin so when that SLNK_CFG.CFG is used the 22XX phones get upset and sulk. Fortunately I have these files and I can put them on the TFTP server along with the 61XX files (pd14udus.bin, pd14odus.bin,pd14cus.bin and pi1400us.bin). That should be stated somewhere otherwise folks who have not been using the TFTP (like myself) will have some unhappy 22XX phones when they try to implement 61XX sets.

I will apprise you of my success or failure....

Cheers,

SD
