Ok, I just talked to our Nortel Vendor (TAC Centre) and they said that the only way to get this to work is if the Asterisk were to support SL1 and use that instead of 5ess.

And since Asterisk doesn't support SL1, it appears that there is no way to get Calling Name from the Nortel to the Asterisk.

Thanks for the update, hmm I wonder if there is some kind of mod or plug in for asterisk that may let you do that...

So are you using asterisk as a remote office or something? How do the asterisk phones use DID's are there multiple lines on the phones as well like in the Meridian?

Just talked to one of our consultants who is doing an integration of Asterisk in another organization.

No, the name will not pass from the Nortel box to the Asterisk box but there is a way to have the Asterisk side pick up the name from the contact list of the person being called so if you happen to have the name in the list it will show. If you have a corporate contact list in on the PC, you should be able to integrate it somehow.

I don't know the ins and outs of it but it is possible.

I'm using the Asterisk to VoIP enable my 11C on the cheap. Total cost so far was about $1000 vs. $10-15k to do it the Nortel way.

I have some users who travel/work from home that want to use VoIP phones. I bought Polycom 501 phones which have 3 line appearances. On the Nortel, I just make a dialing plan that send the VoIP extensions to the Asterisk route. Works quite nicely.

I thought about doing this, but I cringe at the thought of maintaining it...
