direct connecting

I am a red faced newbie here, looking at connecting to an SL1 directly for the first time. My hardware book 1 of 2 is of course, missing. Up till now I have always dialed into the switch via modem, or used a connected terminal. I was wondering if someone could tell me how and where to connect to an option 11 SL-1 directly, and if I need special cords and connecters (such as null modem or DB9 male). Is a terminal always provided or do I use my laptop?

Thanks in advance.

Most systems should have a direct connected terminal, like a VT520 or such and a modem or site event buffer for remote access. If not you can direct connect your laptop to the system on TTY port 0 which comes out of the SSC card and there are switch settings on the front of that card for baud rates. Use an app like Procomm, Reflection or even Hyperterminal as your terminal emulation... There may be additional TTY ports on a tail coming out of slot 1 that you can use for switch access as well.

Is there any special type of cord and adapter to connect with? I've been having an issue with my laptop because it doesn't have a serial com port.

Most laptops are now being shipped without RS-232 (Serial Ports). Your best bet would to be to purchase a USB-to-RS232 Adapater, which emulates a serial port via USB.

You then connect to the PABX Via this port, usually on TTY0.

Just have a look in google for a Cable, http://www.google.co.za/search?hl=en...+To+RS232&meta=

Or your local PC Shop might have one of these. You will need a NULL modem to connect to an Option 11c.
