How??? doesanybodyknow??

This is correct assuming your PBX is configured for ESN dialing. (as shown in the sample ESN printout).

Now a lot of people will laugh at me for saying that, but I have seen everything from the 9 being AC1 in the ESN to 9 being the ACOD on the local COT route, to 9 being XLST'd to the real ACOD, to 9 being the DN of a phantom with DCFW to the ACOD! (That one still puzzle's me! What the heck were they thinking!)

Welcome to my world. As the customer I am onsite for buys new companies I have to go and figure out how the Nars and Bars are programmed. It all depends on how detailed or lazy the techs were.

help for the hearing impaired

Just a caution. When changing the Nars/Bars access from 9, be sure
you clear all possible accesses. I.e. If you change to 3, there should be no
ACD's, Trunks, ACOD's, VM ports, etc begining with a 3. You may be in
for a rude awakening if you don't.

I thought this kick of changing from 9 had passed the way of the Hoola Hoop and
8 tracks.

Luck

Dial by Name - wrong name issue

Changing the BARS AC1 from 9 to 8 is a lot cheaper than the $100 per false 911 call. With ISDN PRI trunking you can't hang up the phone fast enough before the PSAP has the call if you accidentely dial 911. Plus, it doesn't help when you have an adjacent NPA of 913; many were dialing 9+1+913 and missing the second 9.

Also, you will need to find any analog modems that are behind the switch and change their dialing strings from 9 to 8.

Not arguing the point, but they need to dial 9+911 in order to call 911.
We had 0 fasle alarms in 5 years before they changed to 7+911 now we've had 5 in the last year. You just can't stop people from miss-dialing.
Here it's not $100, but $2000 for a business.

Trying to keep it nice

Not arguing either but you may have your system set up to call 911 using 9+911 or simply 911. This is done in the event of panic by the caller. For people that are not on the phone all the time at work where they have to dial 9 first, in the event of a real emergency most people are not going to stop and think if they need to dial 9 (or some other number first) before they dial 911, they will just dial (911).

This is set up by having 11 as an SPN with an insert of 9 through a DMI table. You may want to check your switch and see if it set up. As "the vendor" it is standard practice for us (the company I work for) to set it up this way.

Be cautious when trying to change the ways of the many to accommodate the wants of the boss man.

If you set up 911 in LD 24 ESA (Emergency Services) rather than an SPN, your maint. terminal will spit out a record of what station made the 911 call, and optionally indicate this on a single station display. Also, if you have PRI (and I believe CAMA trunks) you can customize the CLID digits sent to the PSAP.
