Direct Connect to 61c

Has anyone had trouble connecting directly to a 61c with Hyperterminal? I can't seem to get the computer I am using to log in. I'm using XP, I direct connected to our old 21e when we still had it, but I was using Win98. Does anyone one know if Hyperterminal in XP has problems doing this?

What cable are you using?
Is it a null modem?
What are your port settings?

I have used a null modem cable, a straight thru cable (serial cable) and a straight thru cable with a null modem adapter. My settings are 8 N 1 No flow control. I get nothing on Hyperterminal it's not even giving me gibberish. I know the port, on the computer, works because I can use it to log into a Comdial phone system using Hyperterminal. It just won't work on my 61 c. I have it plugged into TTY1 which is set as my maint. terminal.

What other changes can he try?

The cable has to be a Null modem serial right?

Tried Changing Baud Rates
(Tried 8-N-1)
300, 600, 1200, 2400,4800 and 9600 all don't work.

VT100 and VT102

Tried using a different terminal emulator to connect not hyperterminal.

All Don't seem to work.

What other options does he have?
Create a new TTY port and try connecting to that?
He is using the TTY port that goes into the VT-520.

Any other suggestions?

If you want to verify the hardware / software stuff you can CAREFULLY connect pins 2 and 3 together on the DB9 or DB25 (the little global screwdriver is great for this) and when you hit a key you should see an echo on the screen.

Found out what was wrong.
They were using a straight through serial cable with a null modem and not the Nortel cable...

We plugged in the Nortel cable that was plugged into the terminal and put a 25-9pin converter and presto it started working.
