Voicemail pager notification (Outcalling Audits?)

Hello,

Is there a way to prevent the 90# scam in our pbx. For those not familiar here is the scam:

I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying
>himself as an AT&T Service technician who was conducting a test on
>telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch
>nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up. Luckily, I was
>suspicious and refused.
>
>Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#,
>you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which
>enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number.
>
>I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local
>jails/prisons. I have also verified this information with UCB
>Telecom,Pacific Bell, MCI, BellAtlantic and GTE. Please beware.
>
>DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE.

Voicemail pager notification (Outcalling Audits?)

We get calls every several months in our larger offices with similar requests, people call in and ask the receptionist to be transferred to 9....and, unfortunately, some of our receptionists do it without asking! Then we have LD bills with calls all over the world.

We just send out company-wide emails every two months or so telling people NOT to transfer anyone to 9. Thats the only way I've found to prevent this from happening.

Good Luck!

90# SCAM

FIRST 90# WILL NOT GO UNLESS YOU DO A TRANSFER FIRST, AND THE ONLY WAY TO STOP IT IS TAKING TRUNK TO TRUNK ALLOW OUT OF THE SWITCH

RELEASE 26 PRODUCT RELEASE BULLETIN!!

If you change your BARS code to something else (we changed ours to 8, for other reasons) this will prevent this issue.
