IE browser problems w/NRS

Having a remote tech attempting to do some work with NRS is encountering problems when accessing NRS with his IE 6 browser. When accessing the Tools > Configuration menu items, we are getting a IE "Problems with this Web page"... error:

Line: 239
Char: 9
Error: Permission denied:
Code: 0
URL: http//xxx.xx.xx.xxx/cgi/nrsm.cgi

Problem is, the problem appears to be hit-or-miss on a machine level. Originally thought it had to be tech's VPN access, but now finding out that other techs are having same issue. Upon further review, finding other PCs within our office are having the same issue.

However, my old pc, ready to be replaced (Java 1.4.2 and Microsoft VM), doesn't have an issue. We also have newer machines without MSVM and 1.5.x J2RE that doesn't have issues. Played around with security settings, etc., all for naught. I have a suspicion that it is a JVM security issue, but not sure where to look.

I don't have the NTPs in front of me right this second, but in the Sig Server Installation and Configuration Guide (553-2001-212 I think) there are specific steps for setting up your IE browser security settings to properly interact with NRS.

You may want to check there.

Went through the settings and confirmed:
- no popup-blocker (Windows and Google toolbar)
- temporary files - check every page
- turned off auto-complete

Just received an e-mail: according to our Nortel tech, the problem is with Microsoft Windows Update KB918899. According to him, you have to remove KB918899 to ensure proper functionality with Element Manager NRS.

Can anyone confirm this? If true, what next? - A Nortel patch to the sig server or wait for the refix-fix from MS?

It's true - this update prevents to display NRS web-pages properly.
But if you have problems with permission - i think ether you have wrong password or you should configure your IE as it described in NTP.

I believe the "Permission Denied" message is the jscript symptom of the issue caused by the patch. A 'net search showed that IBM is having the same script message with one of their products caused by the same patch.

Install firefox

I have used it now for a while on our CallPilot reporter as the patches MS added to IE prevent it from working with their product. Indstead of waiting for MS to fix their problem, this was the easier solution.

Unfortunately, with Firefox I get the following popup: "Your browser is not compatible with the web site."

The problem is MS06-42 patch 918899. It affects Win XP and Windows 2003. Windows 2000 and NT are unaffected. It is not unique to SMS.

1. P2 CR has been raised to track the problem.

2. Root Cause: Remote window controlling code written in Java Script (Trigger: MS-06-042 Patch 918899)

A workaround has been written, but I do not know if it has been released into the wild yet.
