Just to make sure.. did you check in Device Manager for any IRQ conflicts?

What is an IRQ? How do I do that?

rlc

changing dip switches on the PBX modems helped another source dial in with an XP laptop but, they are using an external modem/not the internal modem that came with the laptop. I will retry the external with the new dips.

Stay tuned.

Okay, with the new DIPs on the PBX systems and using an external US Robotics modem, I connect to my systems. Now, I need to find an internal modem that will work or get use to having extra hardware.\

Rachelle, try eliminating Procomm. Can you connect using Hyperterminal?

Here is an old article explaining IRQ's.

http://www.realworldtech.com/page.cf...WT052498000000

To find out if you are experiencing any IRQ conflicts go to Control Panel - Systems - click Hardware tab - Device Manager. Somewhere in there will either be your modem (it could be PCMCIA or Modem or Com Ports. When you find your internal modem, right click on it and go to properties. When that opens up, you can find the resources tab and in there will be your IRQ information.. in the bottom box will be the device conflict list. It will tell you if there are existing conflicts.

An External modem, coupled with changing the DIPs now allows me to talk to my 81C systems but, MerMail is still a no go. The softkeys never come up. Still working through this. I can't believe this is such a difficult matter to resolve. With all of the laptops and emulator software in the field, you would think that this issue would already have been resolved.

That's a part of the problem... there are so many combinations of laptop and modems that come out of the manufactures that the software companies can't always keep up or choose not to for specific applications.

About 5 years ago we all got new Compaq laptops that would lock up anytime procomm was used to access a USR modem... SEBs and things like that were ok. Compaq didn't care about the issue and neither did Symantec so we wound up buying external modems for all of the laptops. With our new HP laptops all is well with the internal modems.

I have not had much luck with laptop modems and connecting to the Option 11 switches. I don't know exactly what it is (emulation maybe as most are software modems now) but I have never had a problem with any 51, 61 or 81, just the 11s and even then it would work with some systems but not others.

Had to resort to the external modem for a while then when I got fed up with that, I set up a desktop with a modem on it and connected to it remotely (used Terminal Services but XP has it's own version of that) when ever I wanted to dial out.

This created an extra step but as long as I was connected to the office network I could easily dial in.

Sorry this is not much help but it seems to be something we all suffer from.

I had resolve this problem with modem laptop , changing PBX modem setup.
Modem Setup PBX
us robotics sporster 56k
set switches s1,s3,s7,s8 down
the rest up
connect terminal
power on modem
at&b1&w&w1
power off
set switches s1 and s4 down the rest up
end

With this setup , modem pcmcia in laptop worked great.
