Blown Power supplies

Any Help? I currently maintain a site with mulitple opt 11 fiber cabinets off an 81 c...The install was finished about 6 months ago, and within the past 4 weeks I've lost 6 differnt power supplies. I'm either thinking I recieved a bad batch of power supplies or something with the grounds arent correct. From the cabinets #6 isulatated ground wire is used to a grounding bar then the electrician handed off a number 6 to the main service panel...Is there any way to check the grounding? possibiliy with a fuke meter? what readings would I be looking for? Any help is appriciated

Testing grounds in a 'live' system can give mixed results because of various things that might be floating on the ground. Have you had an electrician pop the panel open and check the gound on the inside of it? In Nortel likes the ground to be taken the whole way back to the transformer X0 but I've seen frame steel and sprinker pipe used for panel grounds in the past.

Is there are any other equipment sharing the bus bar with the PBX?

After 6 power supply failures in a month it's time for someone to arrange a root cause analysis with Nortel on the failures. Are they physically damaged hen they go out? (Burn marks, blown caps etc) Do you have a UPS between the panel and the PBX? How is it grounded? Has anyone checked the voltage output on it recently?

Cool Blown Power units

If you need to check your ground impedance you will need an earth loop impedance tester. Your electrician should have one of these in his tool kit and will know how to use it.You do have to be careful where you plug it in to as it can trip the main breaker . I was a maintenance technician in the UK and the correct standard was to run an earth cable to the building main earthing terminal or to the nearest electrical distribution point - not to the nearest water pipe or a radiator. Far more likely however is that you have a faulty peripheral card in one of the cabinets. The card may not show any faults but it will draw too much current and blow the power unit.
You may have to end up swapping out some peripheral cards to prove.

Best of luck

It happens to me in a 5-cabinet Opt11C before. Three of the power supplies were blown. One thing I notice, but I am not sure if the same in your region, if a power supply has a starting of ADPLxxxx in serial number, that batch or lot has a chance of blowing. Though some of them were still surviving.

Maybe just a coincidence...
