Rep Power: 6 ![]() | Adding a new NPA I have heard many conflicting views on this subject, and I am sure that this one will be countered. The most reasonable argument I have heard is to either use a company like Muzak, or buy a CD/tape from a company that specializes in MOH/elevator music/resteraunt music etc. These companies have agreements with the music industries and essentially, when you buy a CD from them, part of what you are buying is the right to play the music on your MOH system. Of course, then you will be limited to the type of music you can play.. Legally though, you CAN NOT go out and by a Celine Dion (bad example) CD and play it unless you obtain the rights to do so. To get more specific answers, I would look up ASCAP or go to this site for better info.. http://www.bbb.org/library/music.asp

Basically, putting something on music on hold is considered "broadcasting" of the audio used. I am told this is universally true in Canad and the USA. Thus, you must have the right to broadcast whatever you put on your music on hold. That being said, I know people in the USA and in Canada who put a local radio station on their MOH and never receive a peep from the regulators. Still others did the same thing and were caught by the regulator and had their hand slapped. You could likely get away with the same thing on a music CD. It would not be legitimate and you would expose yourself to some minor financial penalty if caught. The choice is yours: Either go through the pain of getting something legally in order to remain ethically and legitimately valid OR suffer the pangs of a guilty conscience and risk the highly unlikely pain of being caught and paying some minor fee for your offence. Nothing like a little applied situational ethics. __________________ Life is far too important to be taken seriously!
