Here is what I got.

Meridian Mail Life Cycle Update
Meridian Mail Sustained Q4 2004
Nortel Networks introduced Meridian Mail in 1988 to the acclaim of our customers. It set the pace
for the next decade and a half as being a showcase voice mail system, selling over 70,000 units
and over 10 million seats in over 100 countries! Meridian Mail also enjoyed #1 market share for
many of those years and is well known for reliability, flexibility, and effectiveness in improving
user productivity and total cost of ownership.
Nortel Networks has been an industry innovator, introducing products to address emerging
technologies and related market requirements. In 1998 Nortel Networks introduced CallPilot, the
first Unified Messaging platform in the industry. With the introduction of CallPilot, various
messaging platforms were brought together to provide a singular user interface, combining voice
mail, email, and fax. CallPilot was also received with equal acclaim and established market
leadership in North America and Europe. CallPilot continues to set the pace for Unified
Messaging, with over 7,000 systems installed and over 650,000 seats sold worldwide.
CallPilot is built on elements and proven concepts developed in Meridian Mail. CallPilot has the
same Telephone User Interface (TUI) as Meridian Mail, meaning all commands used via the
telephone set are the same for voice mail retrieval and response.
CallPilot new system sales have significantly exceeded those of Meridian Mail, which
demonstrates the strength of CallPilot and the demand for Unified Messaging features in the
market. Nortel Networks has evaluated this trend and is announcing, via this bulletin, that
Meridian Mail will be rendered into “Sustained” status beginning in Q4 2004. This means that no
new Meridian Mail systems will be shipped beyond Q4 2004. Existing Meridian Mail systems will
continue to be supported in terms of expansion and technical support. (Please see Product
Bulletin P-2003-0253-Americas, “Messaging Life Cycle Management Planning Notice” for details
on messaging product Life Cycle Management and “sustained” status.)
CallPilot offers many significant messaging advancements over Meridian Mail, but there are some
niche Meridian Mail features that are not currently supported by CallPilot. Based on customer
input and continuing business need for these features, Nortel Networks will aim to make them
available in future product releases.
Customers’ investments are secured with Nortel Networks 5-year life cycle support for Meridian
Mail software/hardware with a “current” rating and with continued support of the Meridian Mail
Investment Protection Offer. This offer provides Meridian Mail customers with a cost-effective
migration path to Unified Messaging and CallPilot, while preserving their investment in Meridian
Mail software. It does this by providing equivalent Right to Use (RTU) licenses on CallPilot for the
ports and features on Meridian Mail. For more information on this compelling offer, see
Sales/Marketing Bulletin SM-2002-1578-NA. Also, for customers leveraging their earlier
investment in Meridian 1 by upgrading to Succession 3.0, the associated Meridian Mail will be
supported, provided it is on release 13.

Product Bulletin Bulletin: P-2003-0253-Americas
Issue: 1.0
Date: July 15, 2003
Messaging Life Cycle Management Planning Notice
This bulletin provides:
· The current Life Cycle Management (LCM) status for Enterprise Business Networks (EBN)
messaging products including Meridian Mail and CallPilot.
· Written notice of Nortel Networks intention to change product support rating on selected
parts of the Messaging Product Line.
· A clarification of the support services available for each LCM state (Current, Sustained,
Manufactured-Discontinued and End-of-Life)
· Notification of planned discontinuance of new Meridian Mail system shipments 4Q2004.
Evolution of the Messaging Portfolio
With the successful introduction of CallPilot 2.0 with over 40 major features and the roll-out of the
Meridian Mail Investment Protection offer (see Sales & Marketing Bulletin SM-2002-1578-NA), Nortel
plans to further focus our development and support effort on the high growth portfolio. Nortel plans
to perform the following adjustment to the Messaging portfolio:
· Focus development effort on CallPilot to maximize the productivity of and minimize the cost
of ownership for unified messaging. This means no further development of Meridian Mail
products.
· Preserve high-volume Meridian Mail products, through 4Q2004, but trim low volume
Meridian Mail platforms and options from the commercial offer effective 4Q2003.
· Retire (Manufacture Discontinue) long-sustained Messaging installed base platforms and
software for both Meridian Mail and CallPilot. See the Hardware/Software LCM Status
tables for sustained products moving to Manufacture Discontinue status.
· Discontinuance of new Meridian Mail system shipments 4Q2004. Also see Sales &
Marketing Bulletin SM-2003-0252-Americas “Meridian Mail Life Cycle Update” for more
information.
These changes are being made in accordance to the Nortel Enterprise Life Cycle Management
policies. These policies provide a consistent framework and processes for the orderly transition of
products from a currently shipping to end-of-life status.
