Phantom DN?

Hello,

first off Im really Green when it comes to phones,

we have an Option 11c,

and I have a weird situation where a couple of phones, which are working, making this staticky clicking sound (really loud).
I've tried changing the phonesets
changing the wires to the headsets
changed the cords to the wall
re-punched on the punch down block,

but still same problem. any ideas of what to do would be greatly appreciated.

Clicking Static sound?

Is the static on all calls (i.e. internal, external, inbound, outbound)? It is important to determine whether the static is coming from your hardware, or from the lines entering your building.

Well it happens during inbound and outbound, internally and externally.

actualy the noise happens as soon as you lift the reciever. Holding down the button that the reciever rests on kills all sounds including static (sorry dont know my terminology)

really baffled what to try next,

so you can make and recieve calls, but this loud clicking almost automatic weapon firing sound is blasting in your ears, and the wierd thing is I have at least 3 different phones doing this. I do know that the wiring in the building is very old. (but I was thinking if wiring has gone bad wouldnt it stop working all together?)

and the the hundreds of other phones in our building are not having this problem

Given the things that you have already tried, I'd check the TNs they are built on. Are they all on the same card? It is possible for bad ports or a bad digital line card to cause those symptoms. You might try rebuilding them on another card and seeing if that resolves the problem.

Is the analog line card in the PBX an NT8D09BA rel 5 or lower? If so they are sh!t and should be replaced sometimes reseating the card will get rid of the problem for a little while if it's the one I'm thinking of.

Anything 09BA rel 7 or higher I'm told is ok as are the 09AKs, 09ALs etc.

I could not agree with Slag more!!! I have replace of 12 cards in my system due to a freaking defect in Nortel's manufacturing... and guess what... our site happened to miss the Nortel recall period, therefore we had to pay out of pocket.

What SLAG stated is incorrect. Reseating the card will normally temporarily get rid of the problem if this is what we are thinking of.
You will actually want to replace the card. www.vibestech.com will repair the card for abour 200 dollars and it will come back with a 2 year warranty. This is what we did for all of ours. Do you have a spare? If not they can send you a replacement one and they will keep the one you send in for a little more money.

To reseat the card...
Login to your terminal
LOGI
enter your password at the PASS? prompt
type LD 20
Type DISC ll cc
Where LL is the loop and CC is the card. Hopefully your punch down area is labeled. The card should turn red after disabling. There should be two hing mechanism to retract wich will allow you to slide the card forward. Slide it forward then slide it back into position. Restore hinges.

Return to your terminal and type ENLC LL CC. Your card should blink several times then the light should go off. test your phones.

Type ****
and LOGO
to logoff the terminal
You will want to follow the same proceedure when your when you get your card replace, that is you will actually replace the card instead of reseating.

This does sound exactly like the problems I had with the NT8D09BA cards as well. Reseating it can clear the problem temporarily, but it almost always comes back to haunt you again.

Re: Scary cheerleaders

A couple of questions,

how do I find the LL and CC?
and also does reseating the card remove the current programming on it?

thanks guys I appreciate the help.

Lets say the TN for the phone is 04 00 05
The LL or Loop for that phone is 04
The CC or card for that phone is 00
05 would be the unit on the card used as the station port.

I hope this helps.
