Lost Area Code

Has Nortel finally come up with a solution for allowing a 1'sy 2'sy user to strap on an MCA or CTI adapter to a phone set so that he can place calls straight out of his Outlook.

I know that Nortel was developing products that could do this.

Has anyone had experience with this. I've always been told to stray far, far away from this type of behaviour unless you want to go with a full blown TAPI server.

Is that still sage advice? I've heard that most users at best can only get the thing to work about half of the time.

An easy one for you guys...

Yeah I have it, it works pretty well. You just have to get used to using it. We have a few in service right now. It's a pain to do the first. but once you give up and read the directions it all comes together. Don't forget the external monster power adapter.

Good Luck

Rectifiers and general Maint tips?

We have been doing this for years with MCA cards. MCA's can be made to act as modems responding to standard Hayes commands (e.g. AT). ATDT (digitone dialing commands) dials the MCA's data DN. ATDP (pulse dialing) dials the primary voice DN on the set. Hang up voice calls with the ATHP command. Most dialling software, including Outlook, will allow you to set these commands up to some degree. A Switch said, the first one you set up will take the most effort as you get used to teeking the MCA and the software. HINT: It is easier to program MCA's with displays and use Program+66 on MCA's and MPDA's to lock them in Modem Emulation; makes for easier dialing.

BTW: you don't need the monster adapters or even Shumway power adapters on the new MCA's.

And yet Nortel still hasn't come up with a TAPI SP driver that will run in a Windows XP environment. It works fine on other OS's including (shockingly) Milenium Edition !

SD - does what you said only relate to analogue phones?

We have Taurus M3904/5's and didn't notice any way of tweaking the hardware...

Quite the opposite. As far as I know MCA's and MPDA's only work on digital sets - I'd like to know how you use and MCA on an analogue set. No experience with M3904/5's but I would be surprised if you had no control over certain settings on the cards!

The ACM (Accessory Connection Module) connects to the underside of the M3904/5. There are no access points, switches etc on the ACM. We then have a CTI Adapter that plugs into the ACM, likewise no access points or switches on that equipment either. An RS232 connects the users PC to the back of the CTIA.

Unless I unscrew the covers there is nothing to tweak with on this stuff. I feel cheated by nortel.

Are you using M2xxx series phones?

Yes, we are using 2XXX series phones. There is nothing physical to tweak on MCA's and MPDA's. The tweaking is in the programming of the MCA's. They have various parameters that can be changed. Didfferenc combinations work better with different software.

Sounds like you could give a course in this. How do you connect to the phone? Do you use Hyperterminal or similar?

You are probably correct. I connect direct to RS232 port (COM1 or COM2) on PC to port on cards with modem cable. I have used Hyperterminal but for dialing I use Microsoft Phone Dialer(1981-1996).
