Hey everyone,

I am relearning a lot of this stuff being I haven't maintained a PBX in a couple of years and now am. I am trying to find the TN for a jack that hasnt had a phone connected for a while. All I know is the DES which is the room number that the phone jack is in. How do I find this TN? I am moving a phone from one location to this room. Thanks for any help you can provide..

Nick

For the 2000 series set, you should see all the gray arrows flash once when you plug it into a digital TN. The phone will still be dead. If you enable the TN prior to going to test, you should get dialtone after the set has been acquired by the PBX.

use a toner. a toner sends a tone back through the jack to wherever the other endof the wiring is. If the jack is wired to a tn the tone will come throught the wire to the tn. rub your wand over the tn's and you will hear tone.

Plug a tone generator in to the jack and walk to your distribution frame/com closet/ cross connect board. Use your tone wand and find what termination point that jack wires back to. If there are cross connect wires installed trace them to the TN termination block. This will show you the appropriate TN. If there aren't any cross connect wires then you will be building a new set, on a new TN, and cross connecting this new TN to that toned site.

You said that you know what should be in the DES field. If the phone is truly programmed up and the DES is specified as you think, you can print the TN in overlay 20 by specifying the DES field

Code:
>LD 20
REQ: PRT
TYPE: TNB
TN
CDEN
CUST
DATE
PAGE
DES <specify DES here>
One of the often forgot-about features of this is that you can use the plus sign (+) in the DES field as a wildcard.

i.e. I want to show all sets with ROOM as the first four characters. I type ROOM+ in the DES field and it finds things like ROOM1, ROOM143 etc.

You can also use the + in the middle of the DES string. As in, I know that it begins with B and ends with L so I type "B+L" in the DES field and it finds all TNS with a DES of "Bagel" or "Bull" or "BILL"

etc.

Just a thought.

I could be wrong about the second part of the wildcard. If you use "B+L" from the example above, it actually finds all TNS with "B+" (B followed by anything) As soon as you use the plus sign, I guess it stops looking for trailing characters.

Dialing "9"

Archibald,

I tried to print the tnb with just the description, but the cursor just went back to the D in DES when I pressed enter. I was wondering could I just print a range of dnb and see if I can find the DES I need. I dont have a tone generator at my location.

Thanks,
Nick

You could download dnnobber from pepedog/meridian.com.
DO a full tnb capture of your swicth and then run the captured info into this spreadsheet. Makes for very nice organization, and since it will be in excel format, you can use the find feature. Just a thought

You can print a range of DNs.

Code:
>LD 20
REQ: PRT
TYPE:DNB
CUST 0
DN XXX <-- Type a DN or the beginning digits of a block of DNs here
<carriage return through>
If you use the first digit of a DN (i.e. "2" for "2000") then you will get every DN in the 2XXX range. If you use the first couple digits like "24" then you'll get everything from 2400 to 2499. You can also do a range such as everything from "2" ("2000") to "5"("5000") by typing in "2-5" (without quotes, of course) Or to see everything from 3899 to 4312 use "3899-4312" after the DN prompt.
