Location: Arizona Rep Power: 7 ![]() | A LARGE PROBLEM Apparently, a few years before I took over the PBX admin, my company planned to use the wireless Companion phones. For some reason, Companion was never implemented. I found the Companion IPE cards, a bunch of wireless phones, base stations, admin phone and battery chargers in storage the other day. What advantage does Companion offer over just using analog cordless phones and what do I need to do to implement it? [Edited on 24/1/2003 by freddog]

Location: Philadelphia Rep Power: 6 ![]() | Intercom capabilities? Deployment of companion systems are difficult FD. You need to to a site survey first, analyzing the the effect that the walls, lights, etc, will have on your antenna placement. I am not an expert in this area. Companion has been discontinued by Nortel and will not be supported soon. I did run service on them and they were relatively trouble free. Maybe someone in here actually is certified in them. Only our install dept was certified in them, because of the deployment.

Location: NORTEL - Ottawa Rep Power: 7 ![]() | Companion To answer the first part of freddog's question - Companion is "multi-cell" - i.e. you deploy basestations (antennas) around your facility to provide coverage to as big an area as you want. Calls can then be made to/from the multiple handsets anywhere you have coverage - including the ability to handoff calls from one basestation to another as you walk around. Analog cordless phones are "single-cell" - i.e. you place a single basetation in one location and have a single handset associated with it. You are therefore limited to the coverage area of the basestation.

Location: NORTEL - Ottawa Rep Power: 7 ![]() | SCSI Tape Drive for MM11 on option 11 ..and to clarify mrmike's statement that "Companion has been discontinued by Nortel and will not be supported soon" - Nortel stopped the sale of NEW Companion systems in 2002. Handsets and basestations for existing systems are still available this year. Batteries, chargers, headsets will be orderable through 2006. Final end-of-life (which is where support stops) is end-2007. Yes - it is wise to do a Site Survey first as the most common cause of complaints are due to poor deployments.
