Connecting to MD110 via modem / serial

I have inherited a MD110 system. It used to be serviced by Erricson, then Damovo, but now it's down to me, except I've no idea how to connect.
There's an erricson modem hanging off the end.
I've tried connecting to this, using hyperterminal, but it comes up blank after it connects, and nothing echos to the screen. I'm using a vt100 term type and connecting using 7-E-1.
I've tried connecting from the term window, and it comes up "Connected 9600, V42bis", but then nothing, and doesn't echo anything I type to the screen.
Also I've no idea what I need to do next. eg logon / password

I haven't used modems in a number of years for this kind of thing, is there something obvious I'm missing.

Would it make a difference if I just connected to the serial cable and skipped the modem?

Thanks for any help,

Kind regards
Def

Tried the serial cable, which connected to the same connector that the modem one is connected to, direct into the back of the laptop.
Same deal, nothing echos to the terminal. Also tried 8-N-1 for fun too =)
Am I missing something?

You will need a serial modem eliminator to install between your laptop serial port, and the the serial cable.
Better it would be if you also had a direct serial cable from your laptop to the MD110.
Use the data setup 9600/8/N/1, and send some SSSSSSSS; to the MD.
It will respond with ENTER USER ID and ENTER PASSWORD, if the set up is OK.
After entering the correct data, then you are logged on.
