Hey guys, anyone out there know the MCS5100? I mean, other than looking at the overview at the Nortel website? LOL
I am looking to know if anyone has installed one from scratch, and what problems you may have encuntered.
Also, I am curious as to anyone administrating on now, has any feedback at all on the MCS.

Thanks

No cheating

Hey Opsman, We have it working where I am, I can upload screenshots.

It does exactly what they claim it does. To oversimplify it, It is a msn messenger on steriods for the internal office.

Nortel came out and installed it. It took them quite a while to get it working properly. There was a stack of CD's 9 inches high (slim cases)

I currently admin it now and its is very intutive to manage and set up. From start to completion you can have a user set up in less then 5 minutes making audio and video calls with IM chat capabilities.

So far its great.

RE: MCS5100

here is a screenshot of the MCS Client on my PC.

From Left to Right
Quick Start- Allows you to have a screen with the most common features are easily accessible.

Make A Call..- Pretty simple click on it, then a dial pad appears to make a call

Instant Message- Allows you to instant message any of your co-workers.

Directory- Allows you to add people in your global, personal or contacts list to your list click to call.

Call Logs- Logs Calls..

Friends Online- Basically this is your buddy list, similiar to Aol's AIM client,
but what is really neat is that you can right click names and it gives you a list of options to call people, email them, send them an IM, it has all there info right there cell phone, home phone, work phone..then just click and it auto calls them.

Preferences-your settings

Send file- Send a file from your PC to someone else

Sharing apps-Share applications with other users like Microsoft Excel, word, etc..

Routes- Something really cool you can set up routing for phone calls. Say you really want your significant other to get a hold of you. You can tell the system to ring your desk first, then you mobile, then send you a text message to your PDA...etc...you can route the call anyway you like. Very neat

Personal Agent- All your features in a web format, Web based Gui admin. Instead of using a Client you can use a web based phone with most all the same features.

Not to mention that you can do internal video conferencing with your co-workers and you can do adhoc audio conferencing of how ever many ports you need. All from your little desktop client.

Nortel has really done a good job with this. I do give them kudos.

I have recently had some exposure to the Multimedia Client. It is cool and fun to play with but for half the time intra-office calls have audio problems. Could be the network, my laptop, or half a dozen other things. I will keep playing with it.

I have the multimedia client, and I rarely have issues with the audio.
Make sure you are using a USB headset, it make a big difference in Audio Quality.
I also use it at home on a DSL line, and the only time I have audio problems is when I try to surf the net or download my email, then the audio will hiccup.
Also the network needs to be somewhat up to date.
