Avaya 5610SW dial tone

I've got an IP Office switch in the office with 10 H323 type voip extensions which work happily, however as soon as I take one of the handsets home to use over a static IPSec VPN it struggles to get dial tone. Basically if I haven't used the handset in a couple of minutes when I pick it up to make a call I don't get a tone, but if I hang up and try again it's all fine. The other way round if I pick the handset up to answer a phone only one side can here the conversation. If anyone has any suggestions on what I can do to investigate this i'd be very grateful.

Sounds like you've got a firewall issue. The one way speech is an obvious symptom of this.

How have you got a connection from home to the office? You MUST have a VPN - you should have a hardware VPN (from a VPN router/server to VPN router/server) as opposed to a software VPN (using Windows XP or similar). Once the VPN is established, you should have no firewall on the VPN itself - there's no point, it's secure anyway.

Avaya do not support IP phones connected directly to the Internet. Nor do they support trying to use a software VPN on a PC plugged into a hub/switch and the IP Phone plugged into the hub/switch.

Remove any firewall on the VPN and this should fix your problem.

Cheers

Sorry about that I should have been a little more explicit. The phone itself is inside my home network which is connected to the office over a static hardware vpn. What makes this so strange is that even if I'm certain the vpn is up at the time it still doesn't give me a ring tone the first time I pick up the phone.

It really does sound like a firewall. One way speech is 99.99999% likely to be caused by a firewall. Can you confirm that there is definitely no firewall on the VPN anywhere?

If the phone works in the office but not at home there it has to be something to do with the link and a firewall is more than likely the issue.

The phone definitely works in the office.

It never works the first time I pick it up, only ever the second

the vpn allows all traffice between the phone and the switch that runs over tcp or udp.

Are you in the UK? Which distributor do you buy from?

I worked for one of them (the one that had the best reputation for tech support) and everytime I had this, it was a firewall that caused the problem.

Are you an end user? Or a reseller?

Comstor doesn't ring a bell, sounds like a reseller. I have to stick with original opinion that there's something blocking data from the phone to the system (you still get one way speech regardless of the dial tone issue).

If you're an end user, I'd go back to the reseller. Hopefully they know what they're talking about. Unfortunately there are a lot of cowboys selling/installing IP Offices in the UK and don't know what IP even is!! If you're a reseller, I'd go to the distributor but again there are some cowboys doing that too.

Hmmmm, I mentioned cowboys!!! Nothing personal but I've heard stories about their technical support and from what I hear, they don't know what they're talking about.

I worked for a competitor distributor, who had the best reputation for support. I'm still adament there's something blocking ports which is why you're getting one way speech (among other problems). I'll chat to the guys at the distributor where I used to work and see that they think but I'm sure they'll say the same.

What VPN routers are you using? Vigors?
Do you have anyone else setup on VPN like you? Are they having any problems?

What version is the IP Office? If 3.0(xx), then get it off asap. Preferably 3.1(xx) as it's much more stable. What VCM card card do you have? What type of system 403,406,412?
