Unhappy Unplugged Newbie!

Hi all.

I've been tasked by my husbands business partner to investigate and provide him with telephony options (pbx, key system). He believes their panasonic PBX is outdated, could very well be, and he wants me to "go out there" and search out. Their company is mid-size approx. 50 - 60 employees of which only 40% require individual lines since the remaining are in a factory.

I have been asked because I used to consult to government departments and large-scale corporations in telecommunications (primarily voice). That was 12 years ago, and after breifly surfing the web, things have drastically changed since then. VOIP for instance, was only in disucssed amongst the mainstream.

If anyone can guide me or advise me on where I should begin to kickstart this task, please feel free to do so. Im feeling a tad overwhelmed even though it's my husbands company, I would really like to help them out and get their phone system right.

Thanx to you all in advance!

Hello and welcome.

If you think that VOIP is the way to go for the company you might want to post this enquiry over in the VOIP forum.

You'll find many people here with opinions about what system is best (and it's usually the one they work on ), take the advice they give but check out what your support is like for each product from local vendors as without this you could find yourself asking an awful lot of questions here which your vendor would be able to answer.

Welcome.

Being from up North you may want to check out Nortel.

A BCM would be just right for the size orginization your talking about.

Before you toss the Panasonic under the bus, you might want to qualify "outdated." What do you have and what do you want in a phone system? Unless it's a DBS, Panasonic has grown up and can migrate some of those phones into the latest and greatest system. If your system is the "TD" series, then your original system has 64 ports at best. You can upgrade to a TDA or new TDE system, and unified messaging voice mail, and keep 20 or 40 of your digital sets.

I would say the place to start is find out what they are expecting their phone system to do, what features do they have and what would they like to have.

I know absolutely nothing about Panasonic but I agree with Cnavarro, you can usually save a lot of money if the existing system can be upgraded. That would be the first place to look once you know what your "client" wants.

Good luck!
