dialing an outside line from an ivr program

Hi folks -

First off, I'm an application developer in a small shop, so be gentle.

I have an interactive voice response application developed with Visual Voice Pro 5.0 and Visual Basic 6. I'm attempting to add a feature where the application will transfer a customer from the ivr to an outside help line if human intervention is needed.

So far I can transfer the call fine to an extension, but I havn't been able to access an outside line. We have an intertel axxess pbx.

To do this programmatically I issue a subroutine call like this:

myIVRObj.dial("&101")
where the & is interpeted as a hook flash and 101 is the extension
so far so good

to access an outside line, you would dial 8 on the handset, so I attempt this to get an outside line (would be my cell number for testing):

myIVRObj.dial("&8,5551212")
I hear the flash, but don't hear a dial tone for the outside line, and it just rings and rings from the IVR side, but I never get a connection from the test number.

I've seen in the Visual Voice Pro help files that some PBX systems require "wrappers" such as <> around ascii codes or a ~.

I'd like ideally to transfer the call so
maybe something like
myIVRObj.Dial("&345,8,5551212") where 345 is transfer feature code, 8 is outside line feature and then the number.

Do I need some sort of indicator before trying to accesss feature codes progammatically? Or is there some type of PBX configuration that needs to happen to accept data from the IVR application? Or anything else I may be missing?

Thanks!

Suzanne

No special signals are needed.

However, you do need to instantiate another voice object to dial an outside line. That would explain why I could transfer to an extension, but not outside.
