Question Electra Elite 192 Ports

Hi, i am not a phone guy, but i have a client with this device. He has about 15 phones and wants to add a few more. the local dealer is saying he has to buy the add on box to increase the ports, but i was under the impression that this first box has 64 ports. Is it possible to use them all up with only 15 phones? I told him to ask them how that works and they said if they increase the ports per card then the users will get busy signals after 4 lines are in use. Does that make sense? Any info would be appreciated.

What that means is that for the 15 phones that he currently now has, he only has 4 incoming/outgoing lines. That means that if four people are on the phone at once (either incoming calls or outgoing calls), anyone else that tries to call the company will get a busy signal (except for station to station calls). They might have more than four CO lines from Bell, but it sounds like only four are used.

I'm not saying that you might not have to get an expansion, but if you don't think you are getting the right deal/price you can always look around.

I've got a similar system. Each unit attached to the system consumes a port. 15 phones & 4 trunk lines & 15 VM boxes = 34 ports. Going on that, they could technically add 13 more phones & 13 VM's for each, capping the system out @ 64 ports used.

Does that help?

...my 2 cents

Voice mail boxes do not take away from the usable ports, only voice mail ports do. In-switch voicemails are 2, 4 or 8 port units.

The base (without a PKU chip) ports usable in an Elite 192 is 16x32 (16trunks max x 32 stations) for 48 ports max, not 64.

You can build the system 4x44, 8x40, 12x36 or 16x32. If you have a T-1 or PRI in a base system it will only support 16 channels.

The dealer is most likely saying you need to buy another station card ( ESI-8 ) which support 8 phones each, not an expansion cabinet. They are probably also recommending adding more trunks, because 4 trunks is not enough lines for more than 10 stations.

A PKU chip will allow the system to run at 120 ports.

Interesting! Can you explain the difference between a voicemail port & a voicemail box? I'm confused. We have a system w/ 120 ports, and are shuffling things around to try and save from having to expand the system to add more internal extensions...

Thanks for clarification!

Voicemail ports are the physical connection between the voicemail & the PBX system.

A 4 port voicemail will support 4 simulainious calls into the voicemail, the number of mailboxes has nothing to do with port count.

You can have a 2 port voicemail with 500 mailboxes. You are only using 2 ports off of the phone system to access voicemail, so 2 callers can be in the voicemail at one time.
