I have several fax extensions off of my Definity G3r not 'answering' on an inbound call. Outbound calls can be made. This happens on fax extensions on different EPN cabinets and analog line cards/ports. These are all fax machines throughout our campus.

Any ideas or clues on how to identify the cause? Is there any problem from the tone detection end?

When you plug an analog phone into the jack and dial the fax number, does the phone ring?

Yes an analog phone rings. I've chased this down to a potential faulty analog line card...still investigating though...

Octel 250 Error Log

Have you tried replacing the fax equipment?

I'd look there before the card unless the card is exhibiting other strange behavior (alarms, other phones on this card are experincing troubles, etc).

Purchasing the ASA Software

Did you have a power outage or reset the fax machines? Check the fax's for a manual receive setting. Some of my fax's default to this setting on power up.

Hope this helps

Check the voltage of ringing it should float between 70VAC to 105VAC superimposed over the DC talk battery. Some phones will ring with lesser voltages but it will not be enough to activate the fax machine.

OK - this is what I have to do to resolve this problem:

1. All of the effected analog stations are on one MCC EPN cabinet.
2. Upon review, this cabinet's frequency generator component is emitting 50 volts whereas my other MCC's are emitting 100 volts.

So, I'm going to replace the frequency generator so that its the same as my other cabs' freq. generators and will test this weekend.

I'll let y'all know results in case anyone else comes across prob. in the future.

Please do.

Before going to those lengths have you checked the fax machines? Or is this happening to other equipment as well?

Just curious.

Yes - we have checked the fax machines. Anyways, the FG was replaced and we were successful in sending fax transmissions which were 100% reproduced on the associated fax machines.

Reportedly from our Avaya Business Partner, the FGs on Definity cabinets degrade over time which weakens their signal...so its advisable to test FGs on a maintenance schedule (annually).

Thanks for all the suggestions.
