New Hire Needs a Translation

I work in an all Nortel shop. We just hired a new guy and he has only worked on Avaya. I would like to be able to translate between the two worlds so that his training can be as smooth as possible. Can any of you tell me how I can best help him transition? Are there reference materials that I could read that will help me be a better trainer to him?

I will thank you, in advance, for your time and assistance.

Cheers,
Rachelle

Rachelle, I will give you links here to three basic programming guides for an Avaya PBX. These books will explain how to do these tasks on an Avaya PBX. Your new hire will be familiar with these jobs and you can translate them to Nortel since you will have the same capabilities, just done a little different.

I just downloaded the 3 books and will start going through them. Thank you so much. This is a good starting place.

I knew there was a reason I joined your fan club.

UPDATE:

Hey thanks for all of the chat regarding Avaya. I am so glad that we did this and that I have read so much about a system that I will never use. Management just told me that they were mistaken and the new guy is not an Avaya tech. The new guy worked with Teltronics 20-20 PBXs. Has anyone had dealings with these devices???? Anyone have any documentation or advise how to cross reference this with Nortel???? Geesh!!!

To answer two questions.

Rachelle, sorry. I can't help with that. Google "teltronics 20-20", I got 33,000 hits with that.

BigPhoneDaddy there are no more quickie guides past these three. After this it is the full sized programming book.

Marty, is there anything in regards to ASA/GEDI? I have about 100 phones that weee not programmed correctly and I need to push them out versus doing it manually to each phone. I have to update the abbr dial and add keys.

Thanks, Art

I answered your question in the PM you sent me but since you also asked it publicly I will copy my answer here in case someone else is interested or has a different approach.

You can export the phones to ASA then put them in a spreadsheet. Make the changes there and then import them back to the PBX.

Some features don't work well this way and I don't remember if abbreviated dialing is one of those you will have a problem with. I suggest creating five or six stations to experiment with. Then export those stations and the features you want to manipulate on them. Get the procedure down then do the real phones.
