hello,
at my office, we've maxed out all the expansion slots in our current Definity G3 switch, software version soft. ver: G3V4i.03.0.048.3 (it's from the early 90's).

We've been told that the best way to free up an expansion slot is to turn two of the 8-port digital phone cards (TN754/754Bs) into one 16-port digital

phone card. The 8-port cards use 4 wires and from what i've read the 16-port cards use two wires, but when I've looked at some 6400 series and 8400

series phones, it looks like they take the same 8-port/ethernet-like jack as our current phones (7400 series).
I need to order a new 8-port card and some compatible phones in the next couple of days to free up an Expansion slot in our switch ASAP.

(1) I haven't seen anywhere saying that our 7400 series phones will work on a two-wire dig. ph. card, so I'm assuming we need to buy new phones from

the 6400 or 8400 series? If so, which models will work that have Caller ID Display and will work with the version of Definity we have?
(2) which 16 port card will work with our definity soft. ver: G3V4i.03.0.048.3 ?
(3) assuming it's an "ethernet" type of phone jack that plugs into the bottom of these phones, which two wires of the 8 in a cat5e cable do I use and what

position in the jack do they go? I've never wired these type of phones before, only the analog type with the smaller jack and the digital 7400 series

phones that use four wires.

hello,
I have had some of my questions answered on another msg board, but now have some follow up questions:
after looking on eBay, I think I'm going to go with a TN2181 - 16 port 2W card and some 8410D phones. So this combination of card and phones will work 100% in our G3V4i.03.0.048.3 (it's from the early 90's) switch? I have some concern about the software on the switch being "too old"....hopefully it's not.

second question: the way the current 4-wire digital phones are wired, when looking at the jack that goes into the bottom of the 7400-series phones we currently use, it's the left (or right depending on how you look at the jack)-most 4 wires, which are the colors: orange striped, orange solid, green striped & blue solid.
When I do the wiring for these new 2-wire digital phones, from what another user on the other msg board said, am I supposed to use the middle two wires in the standard cat5e 8-wire/4-pair cable, the blue solid and blue striped?

The easiest way to find out if your switch will support a TN2181 is to type the command "change circuit". This will put you in the screen that shows cabinet A of your PBX. Find an unused slot and type tn2181 then press the tab key. If your PBX will not support the card you will get an immediate warning to that effect. If that slot remains occupied with the board, you are golden. Do the same test for the set type. Add a phone and make sure you can use set type 8410. You do not need to have either card or phone connected to the system to test this.

A single pair digital phone uses the same pair that an analog phone uses. At the wall field punch the jumper down on the white/blue pair of the IW, it will automatically appear in the correct place at the wall jack.

You do not mention that anyone explained the pinout of the board itself. A 16 port digital card is different. For the card itself you will use the first four pairs, skip four pairs, use the next eight pairs, skip four pairs, use the next four pairs, the last pair stays vacant.

yes, I did need to ask about the punchdown pinout, thank you for sharing that info with me!
I just posted a follow up question about if the 8410D and 8411D need power supplies or not...
