Definity Expansion Interface cards

Hi
Can anone guide me on linking a Definity, (version6 software) via Multi mode fibre to another (version6) cabinet, approx 1 km apart.
I presume I will need Expansion interface cards TN 570C and 9823A transceivers at both ends.
My question is, do I need only one card at each end or do I need 1 card in and 1 card out.
Cheers
John H

What you need to use will depend on what your long haul medium is, what kind of Definity you have, and how many modules it already has.

Rather than write a long, possibly confusing, essay covering all possible combinations, I will ask some questions first to see what you have. Then I can be specific.

1. Is your Definity a G3r or a G3i? If it is a G3r I will probably have a couple more questions depending on your following answers.

2. How many port networks does the switch already have?

3. Do you have fiber all the way to the remote cabinet or will you be using a T1 as the medium? Second part to this question, if it is fiber is it all multi-mode or is there some single-mode fiber in the path?

4. Is the remote cabinet an expansion cabinet or a processor cabinet?

Answer these questions and I can tell you how to do it. If it is multi-mode fiber all the way, you already have part of it wrong. You will need the long range transcievers. Those are 9823B not 9823A.

Hi Marty
Thanks for the quick reply.

Definity is G3i
1 port network exists at present
Fibre will be Multi mode all the way to the remote switch
I was thinking of putting an expansion cabinet if this is OK.

Cheers
John

This is easy.

Put a TN570 in slot 1A01 (existing cabinet) and another in slot 2A01 (new cabinet). On the rear of that card plug in a 9823x (more about that in a second). You will plug the pair of fiber strands into the fiber connectors. Make sure you roll the send and receive strands once.

For the G3i there is no programming for an EPN. You can do this live all I would recommend is that the only cards seated in the EPN are the control cards, no station or trunk cards. If the PPN fails to see the EPN automatically, roll the send and receive strands.

You will probably get a bunch of major and minor alarms but do not worry about them because they are not service affecting to your existing port network.

About the 9823, the maximum range of a 9823A is 1.5km and the 9823B is 7.6km. You will be close to the limit for a 9823A. If your fiber run is 1km with 0db loss you can try the 9823A but you would be safer with a 9823B. Use the same transceiver at each end.
