Help Please...cm/g3r/s8700.....

The company I am working for is considering moving me into the Telecom Dept because I have been working their Telecom MACs for a few years.

My Problem is that while I am relatively competent with this type of work I lack a basic understanding on how the PBX is built out.

For instance, currently have an Avaya G3R that will be upgraded to the S8700 platform. What does this mean, is like upgrading from W2K to WIN XP? Is the S8700 the next version of the G3R? Is it a server or software or both?

We will also be upgrading Communication Manager. And my current uderstanding of CM is that this is kind of the application that contols the PBX software and runs off the G3R Server. Is this accurate.

Is CM the interface that allows the user to change stations, vectors, VDNs, Route Patterns....

I'm sorry to bother everyone but I really want this job and know I can do it but I was self thought and need a better foundation before I move ahead.

Thank you for your consideration

First, Communication Manager is the interface to the PBX. You already use that software for MACs under the old name of Multivantage. It will work the same as now, just more features.

The upgrade to an S8720 is a major hardware and software upgrade. Look in the PPN cabinet (cabinet 1) and look at the carrier just above the fans. That is the A carrier and is the processor. That processor will move external to the PBX and will be mounted in a rack. The replacement will be a pair of Linux based servers. Other cards and possibly the cabinets will also be replaced, the main form on intraswitch communication will be IP based.

The purchase price should include some training, take advantage of it.
