Vista licensing requirements

I was listening to a computer radio show this weekend and the host mentioned that Microsoft has published the licensing agreements for Vista, one of those requirements has me thinking I may not upgrade to Vista.

According to the host one of the statements in the license is that you can install Vista in one computer and move it to to one more computer, after that it becomes nonfunctional if you do it again. The reason this is a problem for me is that I am constantly upgrading my three computers, bigger hard drives, better optical drives, Firewire adapters, etc. I also upgrade the mother board every couple years and that could constitute moving to a new computer.

So I install it once, replace the mother board once, and then I am stuck until the next OS comes out or I buy Vista again. This is not cool.

Thanks for the copy of the license. It is paragraph 15a that I want further clarification on. Does replacing the mother board constitute reassigning the license to another device?

Looks like you might get away with 4 installs. Buy it, install it once, change machines & re-install, de-install it, transfer the license to someone in your immediate family then install it once, change machines and install again for final time.

I agree, it will be a pain to manage. I even hate re-installing with a legit copy on the same machine (XP Professional). Always seems to be some hiccup that I need to call the MS help center for.

Are they suggesting that the un-install process will contact Microsoft to tell them that you've done it?

In my case I usually just re-format the hard disk and start again when Windows screws up.

Think I might be sticking to Win2K Pro for a while yet.

That might be able to side step it but it may be the number of times it installs, it might send a registration notification to microsoft so you will only be able to activate the product 4 times, you can uninstall it all you want.

That would be my guess.

One would hope you could re-install it on the same machine as many times you wanted to. I reformat about once a year just to clean things up.

It is for reasons just like this that I am not an early adopter of a new OS. I did not get XP until after service pack 1 came out. This whole thing is fresh on my mind because I just replaced the mother board in my main computer with one that supports the Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a PCI-E video card. Plus a ton of SATA drives and even a SATA RAID5 setup.
