Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Hi, Let me start by saying I'm a newbie when it comes to IP Telephony so please excuse my ignorance. My ultimate goal is to acquire my Cisco certificaiton in (IP Communications Express Specialist, and IP Telephony Express Specialist 642-143). I got my hands on the following equipment: Cisco 2811 Router Cisco 3500 switch with (POE) 3 Cisco 7960 IP phones I want to be able to setup Callmanager Express on the router, make calls between the phones and setup some of the features of CME. Questions: 1. The router wasn't originally used for any voice applications only data and does not have any PVDM modules installed. Are PVDM's required to run CME on the router? 2. I read that you must purchase licenses from Cisco in order to run the CME software, is this true or can I download what I need from Cisco in order to get this running (I have a CCO login) without inccuring any additional cost? If anybody out there can offer advise or point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. I just want to make sure this is doable with the equipment I have and without having to purchase any additional equipment. I don't want to spend hours trying to get this to work only to find out I don't have the hardware or software I need. Thanks in advance for any help. Tankman

For that look to the compatibility matrix: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/...0805acf50.html The 3500 and 7960's will work just fine The PVDM's are needed to convert analog to IP so placing calls from 7960 to 7960 is an IP only call. The PVDM's will be needed if you ever try to hook up an outside line and call of the system. Loading up any Cisco software for production use without having paid for it is a violation of your agreement with Cisco. Loading it up for Lab use is fine but you are not entitled to support so if you call TAC it may get difficult. __________________ Deus ex machina

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Thanks for the info and link, very helpful. This will definitely be for lab use only as I'm setting this up in my basement to use as a learning tool while I study for my certification. Don't plan on hooking up to an outside line so good to know I don't need the PVDM modules, kind of pricey. Thanks again for the quick response and help.
