Rep Power: 0  Country:  | Possible Split Pair? I'm mainly a computer tech, but I'm learning phone systems... The other day one of our installers tried to install a KSU, but the client's site was wired very poorly. They were dealing with three analog business lines (CO/POTS). To top if off there were lightning storms in the area. Needless to say they stopped the install. When they were left site, the original house analog phones could pickup a dial tone and dial, but could not answer an incoming call. When they would pick up the incoming call there would be dead air. I think this is purely a Verizon issue, but the Verizon tech pointed the finger at my guy. Could this be caused by my guy a splitting a pair? Such as having an analog phone hooked to the TIP of L1 and RING of L2? I tried to duplicate this with a butt set and I was unable. What happens if you mix the TIP of 1 line with the RING of another line (or vice versa)? | ||||||||

Location: NW Ohio Rep Power: 4 Gender:  Country: | The ring side of a properly wired line is battery looking for ground. That ground could come from the TIP side of another line or earth ground, it doesn't matter which. If you split a pair of TIPs, you should get nothing. If you split a pair of RINGs you may draw double dial tone. The poor man's polarity checker is to clip a test set to ground and run your clips across the pairs looking for dial tone. That will be the Ring side of the line and you still have to find the corresponding Tip for it. Carl | ||||||||

Location: minnesota Rep Power: 7  | I would have to agree with telcomtom, the LEC will ALWAYS always disavow any knowledge of any problem, I would send one of your people to check it at the RJ21X if it is not behaving there one of two things 1 is a LEC problem or 2 the customer/LEC screwed up the order somehow, and ordered something werid like a ground start like or something out of the Ordinary presuming it is a new install | ||||||||
