Also there was a smaller version of this, the name eludes me but it would tell you cable length by plugging into one side so if the cable was cut it would give you the footage of how long it was . It made it great when you were trouble shooting broken or nic'd cables. I will see if I can find the name of it. __________________ -=Welcome to PBXInfo=- -Become a PBXInfo Supporter -Get more PM Space, Profile Picture, a Signature -Add yourself to Pbxinfo's Frappr -Find Nortel Software

If you can pick up an old tester such as the Fluke DSP-100 2nd hand, it will do your job very well. Be aware however, that some of these older devices used NiCd batteries, which were made specifically for that one instrument, and when they die, they cost a fortune to replace. If you know anyone in the IT industry, see if they can help out - quite a number of cable installers would have had to upgrade instruments as clients moved from Cat5 to 5e, and possibly to Cat6. Since you are not interested in certifying cables - only finding faults - a Cat5 scanner will do your job very well. Most of them will NOT do cable insulation, however, if you're working with cables which may have been damaged, (and so affected insulation) there will very likely be another fault which a scanner will pick up. You also need to be aware that for many of the tests, the scanner needs to be attached to a properly terminated cable (i.e. terminated in RJ45 connectors), and you need access to both ends (there is a test unit, and a remote unit). You can do cable length okay from a single end though.
