Location: LINCS Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Price/Costing Self Employed Greetings If you are self employed or employ others do you work out the price of programming by the hour or piece work eg 100 systems need 30 speed dial changes in each as an example. Or 100 systems need cos 1 on extension xxx or a barring table change. I know costs vary but any rough idea on pricing would help, Thanks in advance

Rep Power: 3 ![]() | Hi taskflag, I would price it through the type of work. If the work would require reprogramming for more than 50 locals, that another computation. For changing cos, that would be another rate, thats reprogramming of a vital part of the pabx access. If, maintenance is concerened, that another price, that would be really high. regards, Sepay

Location: LINCS Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Hi Sepay Thanks for your reply. So basically what I was asking for in my post isn't possible to answer due to the many variables but it does seem like a per unit price is the option, which would decrease on the numbers that need programming. Regards

Rep Power: 3 ![]() | Hi Taskflag, Don't know bout the rate there, but usually we go for the per service. If we have to change/repair/reprogram anything today, the client would pay us our basic service rate. We also go for the reprogramming of per local rate, depends in who is the client and what is the scope of the things need to change. That would my company would do. I haven't really gone to being self employed. Regards, Sepay

One of my favorite examples is setting up Automatic Route Selection on a phone system. I did it on one site in an hour and another site in 4. What did I charge and what was I selling? If you're self-employed in this business, the only thing you really sell is your time/experience. Time is a function of getting to a job site, or logging into a job site and performing work. Your operation has overhead, and your labor has a price. For example, you pay a guy $20/hr, but his loaded labor rate is $30 (an example!). He has to get to a jobsite and you have to pay his slack time as well. You also have to pay liability insurance, the phone bill, the electric bill, transportation costs and the like. If your customer is looking for a per feature price, then you probably need a different customer or a time study. Or, you look him in the eye and tell him that it's $100 per system for the first hour of time. Telecommunications isn't done on a piece-work price and there are no prizes for fast or slow work. So, yes there are too many variables and the price decreases with the amount of work you do Carl

Location: LINCS Rep Power: 0 ![]() | As usual thanks very much for your reply. I have been Self Employed since 1981 it has plus and minus points but I do prefer to be my own boss. All my work is via remote access (dont get out much) have an office, converted from a bedroom, 5 computers etc etc..Suits me though as it means I have no travelling time and can work more or less as needed and take time out to suit. Location: LINCS Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Hi Cnavarro Yes I can figure out costing/pricing, I was just curious and not being a cat it won't kill me Time study is what I use mainly, many thousands of hours work but I do a per unit switch price. You stated. *Telecommunications isn't done on a piece-work price and there are no prizes for fast or slow work. * Actually it is as far as I am concerned I charge a set price but then again I get asked for estimates for programming hundreds or thousands of switches over periods of a few weeks to six or more months. Also I have noted in the past that Ascom Telenova charge a SET price for programming. You stated. *So, yes there are too many variables and the price decreases with the amount of work you do Yep, basically I just wondered who charged what, didnt really expect any replies but it never hurts to ask. The nick Taskflag is mine, and I don't work for IBM. Oh I would really like to employ someone to either be a partner or work on a per hour basis but PABX programming isn't exactly run of the mill and it is virtually impossible to find anybody(no way am I going to train them). Anyway enough waffle from me, thanks for you input Carl Regards

Also if you are looking for others, you can post a Job Ad on there and it automatically emails everyone who chose to receive instant notification of new jobs. Try it out and see.
