bcm down.... ahhhhhhH!

Good morning. I have a bcm that took a power surge on Thursday. It took out the power supply (which by the way for all people that aren't under a service contract, you can get one from your local computer shop!) and then later we found out that it took out a dsm 32 media bay module. We found that was the issue because after swapping out the power supply, it still didn't fire up. After removing the dsm, presto, it came up. Anyway, I had another dsm sent to me, and when I plugged it in, nothing. I completely powered down the bcm, inserted the dsm in, and still nothing. The fan kicks on for a brief second, so there is a short. I have a PRI coming into the switch, an extra DTI card with nothing plugged into it, and 2 dsm 32 digital cards. I assume the other DTI card is a "hot spare", is this correct? If so, can I put the good dsm card in its spot until we can get the board replaced? HELP!!!!

Thx
Angler

Go for it.

Remove a module that you are not using and put in your DSM. One thing to not is that the DSM will have new port numbers. BUt in theory I cant see any issue.

So what you are saying is that in theory it should work, but I will have to reprogram all the ports? If that is the case, I'll just have to order the part and they will be down 32 stations for a while!

also, are they hot swappable, or should the system be powered down. A lec tech told me that they are hot swappable, but I would like another opinion!

If you have an available, good slot, DN's and port numbers will be the same.
(port/dn's are set/controlled by dip switches on the card, so make sure your "new" DSM's dip switches are set the same as the bad one). As far as hot swappable, I have never tried it, but I would say NO.

Thats what I thought, thank you. Of course as a precaution, I always turn the power off before adding/removing components, since it is basically a pc. Scary that a "trained" technician would suggest that!! At any rate, I believe that I still need a bcm backplane module, but nobody seems to know what I'm talking about, even after giving them the nortel part number!
