Hey gang -

Well, I find myself providing remote support to a handful of BCMs. Since I've never seen or touched one (yet) I need to ask......can a system backup can be evoked remotely? And then onto a floppy for storage off-site? If so, how is it performed?

Thanx much,

Scott

If you can get access to the system via dialup, VPN, etc, you can configure the backup jobs remotely. You can back them up to a server/PC on the network (via network share/UNC path), back up to it's own internal hard drive (which is only a small step above doing no backup at all), or configure the backup job to go to a FTP server.

The BRU utility is pretty straightforward to use and is accessible at the main Unified Manager login screen.

Guess it all depends on what type of connection you have to the remote system. Easiest is probably FTP if you have somewhere to dump the files to. Second best (it's kind of cheating) is to set the backup volume to e:\ftproot, then after the backup job is done, start the FTP Publishing service on the BCM, connect with a FTP client and suck the files off that way. It's kind of a backwards way to do it, but it's better than nothing.

Backups won't fit on a floppy, unless it's a basic config with no voicemail. I've seen backups run from as little as 3MB to as much as 300MB when customers don't keep their mailboxes clean.
