Hello pbx gurus, I am in Kirkuk Iraq administering a Caprock sat. private network. Part of the Caprock channel feeds a T1 into a Norstar/Nortel PABX. The PABX box has 3 connectors for a punchdown block. One of the connectors is used and is connected with the puch down block cable into a punchdown block that serves phone extensions: 100 - 124. I have a request to add an extension to existing punchdown block at a distance of about 3000 feet. Is this possible running cat5 cable underground. Also, the cable I have is in runs of 1000 feet. What is the best way to splice the cat5 if it is going underground? Please advise, David.

DW, your going to have trouble getting that to work. The maximum distance from KSU to telephone without an in-line amp is 1000ft. I think you may be able to make it work if you had a 24vdc power supply. Here's what the book says.

å use of a station auxiliary power supply (SAPS) for loops
300 m (1000 ft.) to 790 m (2600 ft.). The SAPS must be a
Class 2 power source that is UL listed and CSA certified.

BFTN?????????????????

Actually with a SAP it's 2700 feet. And thats based upon the standard "jk" type wire, no twists or anything. The bad thing is getting a 1000' cable to extend to 3000'...

Is there a line of site? You can microwave a T1 and use an MCK Extender to get up to 12 phones out there plus have room for data..

Just a thought..

If it is a Norstar MICS you can get a fiber extender if thats an option for you and put a MOX16 at the other end.

We have a customer that has one MICS and 4 fiber extenders running on single mode fiber and the distances are in miles in some cases. There are converters made just for this application.

If you need help with the parts send me an email and I will hook you up.
