We have a residence that we installed an STS with a viking doorbox tied to a co port. Customer is reporting sporadic trouble with the system, saying the phones will call themselves and just pretty much going haywire. They reset the system, and it work fine for a coupla days. I have been unable to re-create said problems and customer is getting upset. They say when the problem occurs, among other things, line 1 will be ringing and when they pick it up they hear a loud squeal and static. The system was programmed using WINDBA for STS. Any suggestions on what to look for when I arrive? We've installed several other STS's and have not had any problems whatsoever. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Most of the time, it's the wiring. Check your resistence on all the extensions, if the resisitence is extremely low on any one in particular, then run a temp cable to it and leave it for a while, if the problem goes away, make the temp run permanent.

did you use the existing house wiring??? uf u did most of the time as stated above its probably the house wiring....

lotsa times home owners splice cables together on an upstairs floor to save time and labor. Also check in the attic if they have one for wire feeds....

I still have'nt seen the problem in action but I did go onsite and checked a few things. I reset the system and checked all wirging for shorts/grounds/resistance. No problem found so far. I also checked the voltage at each port, looks fine. About the only other thing I did was to ground the unused pairs of the station cables to help reduce possible rf problem and replaced the lightening protection on the stations. All cabeling was installed by us a few years ago so is Cat3 all home runs. So far the problem has'nt resurfaced and I left my laptop there with e-trace on, so maybe if it does happen again I will at least have a better direction to head in. Thanks for the input, sometimes the hardest problems are the ones that you can't re-create when you are there. You just kinda have grasp at straws and start the process of elimantion. Thanks again.

High JR, I was stationed for a while at Sherman Field in Pens WAAAY back in the early 70's while serving in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club. Love the area!! In my opinion you are on the right track, but I would also check the KSU ground to see not only that it is good, but not setting up any ground loops. I haven't prog one with WINDBA, so can't say, but have used it in the past on the old Starplus digitals with no probs. Good idea also to ground the spare pairs. We have inst several of the STS's with no probs.

Kinda like the guy who jumped from a 40 story building.....people heard him saying all the way down "So far so good". Its run 48 hours without a problem. I'm kinda thinking it may have been something as simple as the overlay over the DSS keys. That little plastic overelay does'nt stay on very well, and it may have been holding some buttons down enough to make it do what they were describing. Out of 8 phones, 6 overlays were not all the way down. As far as DBA it has worked well so far, but I have to admit I don't feel real comfortable using it after talking to tech support the other day. When I told him I used DBA he suggested I initilize the system and program from the keyset instead. I've done a few others without a problem so I'll save that as a last option.

QTelNet

When using WinDBA do not any partial uploads, it corrupts database .
I set up full database in laptop and then do full upload and then tweak with phone interface. Also do not try to pgm through modem with With winDBA.
You can connect and download with DBA, then make changes, but don't try to upload with DBA via modem, it will stop after 2048 bits and then default the system !!! Go to the tools tab and select "Upload to file".
This will creat a .dnl file which can be uploaded via modem using the hyperterminal interface. For real small remote changes just use the hyperterminal interface.
