Music On Hold quality

Just upgraded to a Comdial FXT112 switch, and replaced the POS radio with a CD player. Sound quality of the hold music was always poor, and now even with the CD it sounds like decent/marginal FM quality. Trying to figure out how to improve the sound quality and looking for suggestions. I've got the CD player connected via a custom made cable that goes between the headphone jack and the switches I'm-not-sure-what-it's-called port What I'm guessing on my own:
1. Amp up the signal. I'm driving the CD player at max volume to get decent sound volume and wondering if that's distorting the output. If I can increase the power between the line out and the switch I should be able to lower the volume and at a more reasonable output level it'l sound better.
2. Quality of the source/transmission media. A better CD player or better cables.
3. The switch itself. I'm kind of discounting this because I've gotten clean hold music out of a switch before and it ain't that complicated for the switch. Or it shouldn't be. I don't know Comdial so maybe it is the switch.
4. Maybe the sound is as good as can reasonably be expected. What quality output can I realistically expect?
4. Something else?

Any suggestions, answers, flashes of inspiration would be appreciated.
