| You should also know how to read and interpret the LED indicators on the telco smartjack. Many times these are also helpful to trace down where the problems are occuring. As in a case this morning, after a storm at a remote branch, it was easy to have the on-site staff look at the smartjack and tell me there were no lights on in the jack, meaning that there was no connection to the CO. It also helps when reporting the issue to the first-line dweebs at telco and you can tell them the NIU is dark and dead. (PS, in my case it was a nice little lighting strike - blew the NIU card, CSU/DSU, couple of ports on a 9150, the alarm system, POTS phone attached to the alarm line, and the fax machine). |
