Dog Survives After 30-Inch Arrow Lodges In Skull
Canine Scheduled For More Surgery

UPDATED: 1:23 PM EST December 17, 2004

PHILADELPHIA -- A dog that survived when a 30-inch-long arrow lodged in her skull will undergo follow-up surgery in Philadelphia on Friday to remove part of the razor-sharp tip.

"Alice," a shaggy, mixed-breed pet with green eyes, was romping around a 100-acre farm in York County on Nov. 12 when she suddenly disappeared.

The dog's owner, Charlotte Williamson of Washington, D.C., was visiting a friend who owns the farm. Williamson found the dog about half hour later, wounded and whimpering under a porch. Alice had what looked like a pencil protruding from her nose.

A local veterinarian sent the animal on to the University of Pennsylvania's veterinary hospital in Philadelphia, where Dr. John Lewis removed much of the arrow the next day in a difficult operation. Where the arrow came from is still a mystery.
