RE: New Alcatel System

wow that is quite the list of "Mitel does this too"

no preconceptions there right?

The fact that the author is looking at 1900 switches and 2500 routers tells me that they have not invested anything in their infrastructure in about 7-8 years, so the idea that ANY VoIP will run on their network could be rated as "slim to none."

As soon as Mitel gets out there and tells them "Hey no problem, we can just VoIP enable your current PBX" they will bite and swallow a new system with massive limitations.

BTW- since when is a non-standard version of windows considered Proprietary? Besides, locking down Windows Server by disabeling half the crap it comes with is only an improvement. So what if you don't get to be screwed by Windows Update every other month. At least when a patch comes from CCO, I know it's been tested on my exact box.

No system is perfect, and if it doesn't do what you want, then find one that does, but I am so sick of this industry's kool-aid drinkers whining about how "their box does this already".

Seriously, then why are you even looking at new stuff? Make of list of what you need and compare it against that? If you don't need something new then be happy with what you have. I did not see any analysis in that post that said "Our business requirements can/can not be met by this product because...."

Lastly - Latency is solved by QoS. Every IP PBX vendor on the planet will tell you the same thing. If your network is congested there is no way a Cisco IP Tel packet will perform any better or worse then one from Avaya, Mitel, Nortel, NEC, or even Astrix. If the original guy is still running 1900 switches then he has bigger network issues to think about, like spanning-tree.

So, good luck with any VoIP deployment. I would suggest waiting until you identify a need.

Go look up XML integrations and see if it makes sense (paging, text messaging, conferencing, phone control, data entry, data query, weather maps, real-time traffic maps, etc)

take care, I didn't mean to be caustic, sometimes I just come across that way (or so my wife tells me)
