Microsoft Office Communications Server ?

Hi,
Does anyone have experience with integrating MS Office Communications Server with an existing PBX?
I work at a University in Spain, we have a pretty old Ericson MD110 with 5000 extensions. We are planing to buy a new IPBX and migrate over the coming years.
Strange enough is that we have 5000 extensions for only 3000 employees, and most of employees are off their office teaching all day. So the unified comunication features with presence server seems an interesting option and the MS Comunicator seems a reasonable substitution option in lots of cases.
My idea is to buy a IPBX with 500 IPPhones for office staff and management and interconect it with the MS Office Comunications Server over SIP with the remaining 4500 MS Comunicator clients.
Any idea if this has been implemented elsewhere? About the hardware requirements?
Any help welcome!
Francois
