I don't understand this feature much better than you do, but when I looked in the Features and Service NTP (read this section) it looks like your problem may be related to the MARP issue. Which extensions are marp'd where and where the DN's appear on the phone.
It looks a wee bit complicated, like you said, so while I can't explain it to you, I can tell you to read that part of the NTP for a slightly better grasp of the feature.
