USTelecom Comments on IRS Plan for Telephone Tax Refunds Background: Today, the Internal Revenue Service announced its guidance for residential consumers to collect the refund of the Federal Excise Tax. The long-distance portion of the tax was found unlawful by several federal courts. The IRS issued IRS Notice 2006-50 which conceded the issue and today's announcement further elaborates on how residential consumers can collect their refunds in their 2006 federal income tax filings. The following statement is from Walter B. McCormick Jr., President and CEO of USTelecom: "In setting reasonable reimbursement amounts, the Internal Revenue Service has made it easy for consumers to collect their refund of the federal excise tax. We appreciate the IRS' willingness to work with telecom providers to minimize the disruption for our customers and will continue to work diligently with Congress to repeal the remaining tax still imposed on local phone service. "
